They understand everything, but they still don’t say it

It’s the one that keeps you up: your child looks at you, understands you, points at what they want — but the words don’t come out. And every time you hear another child the same age talking, the thought comes straight back.

First words is 200 illustrated cards to get language moving through play. They aren’t written: they’re said out loud. One at a time, no rush.

How they’re organised

Five steps, one after the other. You don’t skip ahead: you move to the next level when the one before comes out on its own.

  1. The word. One big clear drawing, with the word underneath in capitals. You say it, they repeat it. 52 cards.
  2. With the article. The same thing with a, an or the in front — the step from a single word to the first piece of a sentence. 52 cards.
  3. Colours. The shape coloured in on one side, the same shape empty on the other to fill in the same. They learn the colour and say its name. 30 cards.
  4. Opposites. Big and small, above and below, inside and outside, many and few. Two boxes side by side: the difference is visible, so it gets described. 33 cards.
  5. Numbers. Count the objects, then the digit and the number written out. One to ten. 33 cards.

Why they work

  • One single image per card. Nothing to search for, nothing to choose: look and name it.
  • Clean drawings, no clutter. A dog has to look like a dog at first glance.
  • They’re for speaking, not writing. Eyes and a voice are enough. You can do them in the car.
  • Five minutes is plenty. Three cards every day beats twenty once a week.

One thing said plainly: these are play activities to encourage language, like the ones in any activity book. They are not therapy and they do not replace a paediatrician or a speech and language therapist. If you have a concern about how your child is talking, take it to them: no worksheet can do that for you.
